Jacob

Rodusta: Jacob-lampailla on mustavalkoinen turkki ja mahtavat sarvet. Rotu on peräisin Isosta-Britanniasta ja tunnetaan myös nimellä Piebald Sheep. Jeanne-Marien kehruublogissa on lampaista lisää kuvia ja hänen henkilökohtainen kehruukokemuksensa.

Ensivaikutelma: Lampaassa on tummanruskeaa ja valkoista selvinä läikkinä, ruskeat tapulinpäät ovat vaalentuneet auringossa. Kuitu hienoa, pehmeää, kiharaa, valkoinen villa kiiltää kauniisti. Monien mahdollisuuksien villaa: sen voi joko erotella väreittäin tai sekoittaa ja tehdä kaunista meleerattua lankaa. Voisi olla hyvää myös huovutukseen (en testannut). Tässä villassa on vaihtelua ilman värjäämistäkin.

Kehruu: Pesin villan ja kehräsin sen karstaamatta yksisäikeiseksi liukuvärjätyksi langaksi. Pestynä villa tuntuu kuohkeammalta ja joustavammalta kuin suomenlampaan villa. Villa on oikein mukavaa kehrättävää. Yksi suosikeistani. Jälkeenpäin ajatellen olisin voinut kerrata langan käyttämällä Navajo-tekniikkaa, jolloin värinvaihdot olisivat säilyneet valmiissa langassa.

Lanka: Lanka on pehmeää ja kuohkeaa, kevyttä, tuntuu hyvältä iholla. Ruskeassa langassa on mielenkiintoista tummemman ja vaaleamman sävyn vaihtelua, kermanvalkoinen on hohtavaa ja kiiltävää.

Käyttö: Sopii moneen käyttöön, myös vasten ihoa pidettäviin neuleisiin. Voisi olla mielenkiintoista myös kudonnassa tai huovutuksessa. Itse tein tästä raidalliset unisukat. Niin mukavat, että ne unohtuvat päälle sängystä noustuakin. Yksisäikeisinä ne tosin eivät kestä kovaa kulutusta. Harvapa ylellisyystavara kestää.

About the breed: The Jacob sheep is known for its distinctive black and white colour and very prominent horns. The breed is originally British, known formerly as the Piebald Sheep. First impression: The fleece has distinct white and dark brown areas, the ends of staples are lighter brown. The fibres are fine, crimpy, and the white wool is very shiny. This fleece offers a lot of possibilities: you can separate the wool by colour or blend the white and the brown and make a nice jaspe yarn. This wool could be good for felting (though I didn't test it).

Spinning: I washed the fleece and span it without carding to a multicoloured ombré single. When washed, the wool feels more airy and springy than the Finnwool. Very easy to spin. This is one of my favourites fibres, definitely. As an afterthought, I could have plied the single using the Navajo plying technique and thus preserve the colour transitions in the yarn.

Yarn: Soft and airy, feels good against the skin. The brown parts show interesting shades of dark and light brown, the creamy white yarn is smooth and lustrous.

Use: Suitable for many kinds of knitwear, even for next-to-skin graments. Could be interesting also for weaving and felting. I made striped bed socks out of this yarn. They are so soft and comfortable that I forget about wearing them. Being made of singles, I think, though, that they will not be very durable. Few luxury items are.
