Swifter

Rodusta: Swifter on uusi rotu, joka kehitettiin Hollannissa 1970-luvulla. Rotu on risteytys texelistä ja flaamilaisista lammasroduista.

Ensivaikutelma: Raakana kellertävää (kellertävä väri johtuu villan rasvasta, lanoliinista), kuidut kiharia, takertuvat toisiinsa, mahdotonta kehrätä sellaisenaan, kuin huovutusvillaa. Pestynä valkoista, kiiltävää, muistuttaa polyesterivanua! Hyvin kuohkeaa: 50 grammaa vastaa volyymiltaan 100 grammaa jotain toista villalaatua.

Kehruu: Suhteellisen helppo kehrätä, vaikka jonkin verran nyppyjä tuli. Ne eivät kuitenkaan juuri näy kuohkeassa langassa. Kokeilin kertausta Navajo-tyyliin, koska lankaa tuli vain yksi rullallinen.

Lanka: 50 grammasta villaa sain 41 grammaa lankaa, noin 52 metriä. Kuohkeaa, kimmoisaa, karheahkoa.

Käyttö: Ei sovi ihoa vasten tuleviin vaatteisiin. Kuohkeana villana luultavasti lämmintä. Kävisi myös täytemateriaaliksi.

About the breed: The Swifter is a new, highly productive sheep breed developed in the Netherlands in the 1970's. It is a cross between Texel and Flemish sheep breeds.

First impression: The raw fleece is yellowish (due to lanoline), the fibres are crimpy, stick to each other like felting wool so that it is impossible to spin the fleece without washing it first. The washed and carded fleece is white and shiny, resembles polyester fibre! Very bulky: 50 grams of this fleece equals in volume 100 grams of some other type of wool.

Spinning: Relatively easy to spin although there were some noils. However, they disappear somewhere in the springy yarn. I tried Navajo plying for the first time in my life on this wool since I only had one bobbin of it.

Yarn: 50 grams of fleece gave me 41 grams, ca. 52 metres of bulky, elastic and a bit rough yarn.

Use: Not suitable for next-to-skin garments. As the wool is airy, it probably is very warm. Could be used for stuffing.
